Winter

There are things to love about winter. The avocados are fantastic and so is the fennel oranges and mandarins. Both of our kids were born in winter so we have parties and dinners and excited children. It rains. Today is the shortest day, so the days get longer from here. Like a true Melbournite I have whinged almost exclusively about the weather for all of this blisteringly cold day. Luna Park

While in Sydney we treated the kids and ourselves to a trip to Luna Park. The ferry ride over was a thrill in itself because the day was hot and sticky, but the sea breeze on the ferry, with the view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge from beneath was all the anticipation we needed for a great day. The kids loved the rides but I loved the artwork which has been restored in recent years so it is fresh and vibrant but in no way garish. Not a drop of fluro anywhere to be seen. I spent a lot of our time there soaking up the Harbour setting and the enormous Australian sky in its full sunny glory.

These tiny photos don’t really do it justice but you get the general drift.

Happy Happy Happy

Happy New Year to Cottage Nerd readers.

At the end of my first six months of blogging and 8 months of skirt-making I am happy to report a certain level of tiredness, but it is tiredness without exhaustion, so I look forward to a rest and to throwing myself in to next years’ activity.

I am also happy to report that in this six and 8 months I have learnt a lot and am working through plans for selling skirts next year that will be focussed, and hopefully not draining energy. Maybe even on-line sales!

My third happiness is in the health and well-being of all loved ones, family and friends. 2009 was a challenging year for myself and some others around me. I don’t expect this year to be any less challenging I just pray that we have the strength and love to carry what we must and let go of what we may, and be kind where we can.

The sun is shining for Nicky the potter

These photos are full of promise and excitement because I happen to know that Nicky hasn’t ‘done anything’ for a long time, but has recently rented this space and has evidently made a start. When she sent this to me she said that her creative space is not a sun drenched place of enlightenment but a concrete corner in Nth Melb, full of monotone clay. No colours, only texture and shape. But the sun is shining for Nicky in this place. I think from a sewing point of view it must be nice to be able to narrow it down like that. Deal with texture and shape first and then deal with colour. Is that how it works?

This piece of fabric has been hanging in my friend Sue’s window for the last thirty plus years. Not a fade mark, not a moth hole. Its the sort of thing that fabric-wise makes my heart swell with joy. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, maybe just take it out of the fabric cupboard and look at from time to time. Definitely another aaahhh…….

& come up with stunning ideas and make them real
* live harmoniously with all
